Canadian-traded shares were modestly higher around midday, led by gains among energy companies.
Just after noon, Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 0.2% at 20459.02, while the blue-chip S&P/TSX 60 jumped 0.3% to 1228.95.
The exchange’s index of energy companies was up 2.2% on the day. IT companies, on the other hand, traded 1.3% lower.
Class A and Class B shares of Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., a convenience-store operator, fell by 1.7% and 1.1%, respectively, after the company said it has agreed to buy back 6.4 million Class B shares at a 2% discount to Thursday’s closing price.
Great Panther Mining Ltd. sank 8.2% to C$0.56 after the company reported that third-quarter production came in below expectations because of low ore tonnage from its Tucano mine.
